Hochschule für Gestaltung Ulm, influential German design school founded in 1953, successor to the Bauhaus.
The Hochschule für Gestaltung Ulm was founded in 1953 by Inge Aicher-Scholl, Otl Aicher, and Max Bill in Ulm, Germany. The school’s origins trace back to an initiative by the Scholl Foundation, created in 1950 by Inge Scholl in memory of her siblings Sophie and Hans Scholl, members of the White Rose resistance group executed by the Nazis in 1943.
Max Bill, a former Bauhaus student, served as the school’s first rector and designed the building complex, which was inaugurated on October 2, 1955. The reinforced concrete structure included spacious workshops, dormitories, and a cafeteria. HfG Ulm quickly gained international recognition by emphasizing a holistic, multidisciplinary approach to design that integrated sociology, psychology, politics, economics, philosophy, and systems-thinking with aesthetics and technology.
During its operation from 1953 to 1968, HfG Ulm implemented progressive design methodologies across departments including Product Design, Visual Communication, Industrialized Building, Information, and Filmmaking. The school profoundly influenced modern design education and practice, particularly through collaborations with companies like Braun. The HfG-Archiv Ulm preserves the school’s legacy and documents its impact on design history.
