Global brand consulting firm founded in 1941, known for airline identities and pioneering consumer research in package design.

Landor was founded in 1941 by German-American designer Walter Landor in San Francisco, initially focusing on packaging and corporate identity for local wineries and breweries. After attending the 1939 New York World’s Fair, Landor traveled west to San Francisco and decided to establish his practice there, bringing European design sensibilities to American branding.

From the 1960s to the 1980s, Landor established its headquarters on board the renovated ferryboat Klamath, moored in San Francisco Bay. The firm became known for airline identities, designing corporate identities for Alitalia, British Airways, Garuda Indonesia, Japan Airlines, Delta Air Lines, Cathay Pacific Airways, and Singapore Airlines. Other notable clients include Coca-Cola, Levi’s, GE, Fuji Film, 3M, and the World Wildlife Fund.

Walter Landor was one of the first designers to apply consumer research to package design, observing consumers in real-life situations and soliciting in-store feedback. The firm was acquired by Young & Rubicam in 1989 and subsequently became part of WPP Group. Following a 2021 merger with Fitch to form Landor & Fitch, the company rebranded back to Landor in 2023.
