The world's largest independent design consultancy, founded in 1972 by five partners in London.
Pentagram was founded in 1972 in London by Alan Fletcher, Theo Crosby, Colin Forbes, Kenneth Grange, and Mervyn Kurlansky. The name reflects the five founding partners, mirroring the five points of a pentagram. The firm evolved from earlier partnerships including Fletcher/Forbes/Gill, established in 1962, and Crosby/Fletcher/Forbes, formed in 1965.
The firm pioneered an unusual structure in which a hierarchically flat group of partners own and manage the consultancy. Ownership is restricted to designers, each responsible for their own team and clients while sharing resources and central functions. Today, Pentagram is owned and run by 24 partners across offices in London, New York, San Francisco, Berlin, and Austin, making it the world’s largest independent design consultancy.
Pentagram’s partners have created iconic identities for clients including Mastercard, Verizon, The New York Times, Citibank, Tate, and the Museum of Modern Art. The firm spans multiple disciplines including brand identity, environmental graphics, product design, and digital experience design.
