Pharmacist who invented Pepsi-Cola in 1893 and founded the Pepsi-Cola Company in 1902.
Caleb Davis Bradham (1867–1934) was an American pharmacist who invented Pepsi-Cola. Born in Chinquapin, North Carolina, he graduated from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and attended the University of Maryland School of Medicine before leaving around 1890 when his father’s business went bankrupt.
Bradham became a public school teacher before opening Bradham Drug Company in New Bern, North Carolina, which included a soda fountain. He obtained his pharmacist license on July 9, 1895, and invented the Pepsi recipe in 1893, naming the drink after “dyspepsia” and “cola” to market its digestive benefits. He incorporated the Pepsi-Cola Company on December 24, 1902, and registered the first Pepsi-Cola trademark on June 16, 1903.
By 1905, Bradham began bottling Pepsi-Cola and awarded franchises across 24 states. However, sugar price fluctuations after World War I devastated his business. After purchasing large quantities of sugar at 28 cents per pound, prices collapsed, and Bradham declared bankruptcy on May 31, 1923. He returned to operating his drug store until his death on February 19, 1934.
