Cole Rise is an American designer, photographer, and entrepreneur who created the iconic Instagram camera icon in 2010. Instagram CEO Kevin Systrom commissioned Rise to design a logo inspired by vintage Bell & Howell cameras from the 1950s, which Rise completed in just 45 minutes. He also designed seven of Instagram’s original built-in filters, including the filter bearing his name.
Rise founded his first web design company at age 16 and has built a diverse career spanning photography, design, and technology. He has photographed for Harley-Davidson, Norway’s tourism board, National Geographic, and New York Fashion Week. In 2012, Apple acquired his web design startup Particle, bringing Rise onto the iAd platform innovation team.
Rise created Litely, a successful photo filter application, in 2014. He has worked at Yahoo, Instagram, and Polaroid, and currently serves as Principal Designer at Microsoft. When not designing, Rise is an active pilot and space camera maker.
