American lettering artist who designed logos for AC/DC, HBO, and Time magazine masthead.
Gerard Huerta is an American typographer and graphic designer born in 1952 in southern California. He studied illustration at ArtCenter College of Design in Pasadena, graduating in 1974 before moving to New York to work as a staff album cover designer at CBS Records.
During his time at CBS Records, Huerta created lettering and logos for musicians including AC/DC, Willie Nelson, Ted Nugent, Bob Dylan, and Alvin Lee. His lettering for AC/DC’s Let There Be Rock album evolved into the band’s iconic lightning bolt logo still used today.
After establishing his independent practice, Huerta designed logos for HBO, MSG Network, Swiss Army Brands, Nabisco, and Pepsi. His masthead designs include Time, People, Money, The Atlantic Monthly, PC Magazine, Adweek, Architectural Digest, and Condé Nast Traveler. His work is in the permanent collection of the Museum of Modern Art, and the Connecticut Art Directors Club inducted him into their Hall of Fame in 2025.
