Ian Spalter is an American designer with over 20 years of experience spanning digital product design and brand strategy. Born and raised in New Rochelle, New York, he graduated from Hampshire College before launching his career at R/GA, where he served as creative lead for Nike’s digital sport business.
Spalter worked as director of design at YouTube and Foursquare before joining Instagram in 2015 as director of design. He led Instagram through its major 2016 brand refresh and was instrumental in introducing Instagram Stories, one of the platform’s most transformative features. His work was featured in the Netflix design documentary series Abstract: The Art of Design.
In 2019, Spalter and his family moved to Japan, where he headed Instagram’s new Tokyo headquarters. Fast Company named him one of the 100 Most Creative People in Business in 2013. As one of few Black executives in technology, he has consistently advocated for diversity and inclusion in the design industry.
