Co-founder of Adobe Systems who created PostScript, Adobe Illustrator, and the PDF format.
John Warnock (1940–2023) was an American computer scientist and entrepreneur who co-founded Adobe Systems in 1982. Born October 6, 1940, in Salt Lake City, Utah, he failed mathematics in ninth grade but went on to earn degrees in mathematics and philosophy, a PhD in electrical engineering (computer science), and an honorary science degree, all from the University of Utah.
Warnock met Charles Geschke while working at Xerox, and together they founded Adobe after leaving the company. He served as the creative driving force behind Adobe’s foundational software products: PostScript, Adobe Illustrator, and the PDF (Portable Document Format), which revolutionized digital publishing and document exchange worldwide.
Warnock retired as Adobe CEO in 2001 but continued co-chairing the Adobe Board of Directors with Geschke until 2017. His innovations fundamentally transformed how people create, share, and consume digital content. John Warnock died in Los Altos, California, on August 19, 2023, at age 82 from pancreatic cancer.
