German graphic designer who created the visual identity and pictogram system for the 1972 Munich Olympics.

Otl Aicher (1922–1991) was a German graphic designer and typographer who transformed modern visual communication through his work on the 1972 Munich Olympic Games. Born in Ulm, Germany, he was arrested in 1937 for refusing to join the Hitler Youth and later deserted the German army in 1945.

After World War II, Aicher studied sculpture at the Academy of Fine Arts Munich and opened his own studio in Ulm in 1947. In 1953, he co-founded the influential Ulm School of Design (Hochschule für Gestaltung Ulm) with Inge Scholl and Max Bill, which became a leading educational center until its closure in 1968.

As lead designer for the 1972 Summer Olympics in Munich, Aicher created the groundbreaking pictogram system that revolutionized wayfinding and visual communication. His work directly influenced the U.S. Department of Transportation’s 1974 pictogram standards, which became the foundation for public signage worldwide. Aicher also developed the Rotis typeface and pioneered corporate design for Braun and Lufthansa.
