Design partnership founded by five designers in 1972, pioneering the collaborative multi-partner studio model.
Pentagram was founded in 1972 in Notting Hill, London, by five designers: Alan Fletcher, Theo Crosby, Colin Forbes, Kenneth Grange, and Mervyn Kurlansky. Each founder was already a leader in their field with successful independent practices, but they believed they could create better work through collaboration in a larger setting.
Colin Forbes, born in London in 1928, studied at the Central School of Arts and Crafts and co-founded Fletcher/Forbes/Gill with Alan Fletcher and Bob Gill on April Fool’s Day 1962. Forbes later moved to America to establish Pentagram’s New York office, recruiting Michael Bierut, Paula Scher, and Woody Pirtle to cement its success.
Pentagram established a unique non-hierarchical structure that preserved each partner’s autonomy while encouraging collaboration and resource sharing. This partnership model allowed individual designers to maintain their personal creative vision while benefiting from collective expertise. The structure has enabled Pentagram to grow into a global design consultancy with offices across multiple continents while retaining its founding principle of designer-led collaboration.
