Echo of Moscow was a prominent Russian radio station known for its liberal stance and critical coverage of government policies. Established in 1990, it gained significant recognition for providing a platform for diverse viewpoints, especially during pivotal moments in Russian history, such as the 1991 Soviet coup attempt. The station operated under the ownership of Gazprom-Media, which held a majority stake, yet managed to maintain a degree of editorial independence. However, following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in 2022, Echo of Moscow was forcibly taken off the air by state authorities due to its critical reporting. Subsequently, its operations ceased, but many former staff members transitioned to online platforms, continuing their journalistic efforts from abroad.
