The Bulldogs compete in NCAA Division I and are members of the Southeastern Conference (SEC). The official mascot is an English Bulldog named Uga, (derived from an abbreviation of the University of Georgia), while the costumed character version of Uga is Hairy Dawg.
The university sponsors nineteen sports – baseball, men’s and women’s basketball, men’s and women’s cross country, women’s equestrian, football, men’s and women’s golf, women’s gymnastics, women’s soccer, softball, men’s and women’s swimming and diving, men’s and women’s tennis, men’s and women’s track, and women’s volleyball. Those 19 teams have won a combined 45 national championships (including 28 NCAA championships) and 172 Southeastern Conference championships through the end of the 2013–14 school year.
