History of the Gillette Logo

After acquiring the German company Braun in 1967, Gillette initiated efforts to create a new logo for what would become The Gillette Company. Dr. Fritz Eichler and Braun’s in-house team led the project, focusing on more than just aesthetics. They explored the deeper purpose of a logo, debating whether it should simply symbolize corporate strength or act as a communication tool reflecting values like fairness, decency, and quality. This question guided their work, ensuring alignment with Gillette’s core principles of internationality, reliability, and quality.

The goal was to create a logo that transcended cultural boundaries and communicated universally, while also uniting the company’s diverse product range. Gillette was more than just razors—it included brands like Right Guard deodorant, Flair felt-pens, and Paper Mate ballpoint pens. The challenge was to elevate Gillette’s broader image, transferring the goodwill of its razor products to other brands and emphasizing its multifaceted capabilities and progressive vision.

Research from the American design consultancy Sandgren & Murtha highlighted the strength of the Gillette name, suggesting it could effectively serve as an umbrella brand. At the time, the company’s name was inconsistently presented across products, with arbitrary lettering and design. By formalizing its visual identity, Gillette aimed to enhance brand recognition and create an image with lasting equity.

The final decision was to craft a visual identity featuring two elements: a logotype reading “The Gillette Company” and a logo. Together, these components were designed to embody “self-assertive unobtrusiveness” while reflecting the high quality consumers could expect from Gillette’s products.
